On Saturday, November 8, the kitchen of Kalihi Union Church was filled with the smiles and laughter of children.
Twelve young “Community Helpers” joined this special workshop to experience the joy of working for others.
🍱 A Meaningful Collaboration with Touch A Heart
This program was a special collaboration with Touch A Heart, a Hawai‘i-based nonprofit that empowers individuals through food service and job training.
We were honored to welcome Robin Kumabe (Executive Director), Colin Kumabe (Director of Operations & Training), Maiko Espiritu (Japanese staff), and volunteer Emma as our instructors.
Together, the children learned how food can connect people and spread kindness throughout the community.
🍪 Cookie Baking & Meal Box Experience
Wearing hairnets and gloves, the children stepped into the kitchen with a mix of excitement and curiosity.
Their first task was baking Baker’s Heart Hawaii cookies — made with a special flour from kiawe tree pods.
They carefully shaped the dough by hand, laughing as they tried to make each one the same size.
Colin skillfully baked them in the oven, while the children helped prepare baked spaghetti meals for volunteers, topping them with cheese before delivery.
Amidst the bustle of the kitchen, their focus and teamwork shone brightly.
⛪ A Visit to the Church & Heartfelt Message
Next, the children toured the church and received an inspiring message from the pastor before taking a group photo together.
It was a meaningful time for them to reflect on what “community” truly means.
When they returned to the kitchen, the cookies were perfectly baked—filling the room with a sweet aroma that brought instant smiles.
Everyone enjoyed tasting their freshly made treats, saying “So good!” with happy faces.
📝 Reflecting Through the Work Notebook
After the activities, the children gathered upstairs to write in their Work Notebooks.
They wrote or drew about what they felt—
like “I was happy when I gave cookies to others” or “I want to help again.”
Finally, each child received a Certificate of Completion with a MIRAI HANA sticker and a bag of Baker’s Heart cookies, proudly saying “Mahalo!” with bright smiles.
🤝 Learning to Give and Share
That same day, church volunteers were out cleaning and caring for community facilities.
The children personally handed their freshly baked cookies to those volunteers, exchanging warm “Thank you!” and “You’re welcome!” greetings.
When someone said, “This made my day!”, their faces lit up with pride.
They realized that true joy comes not only from making something, but also from sharing it with others.
🌺 Connecting Hearts Through Experience
Through this workshop, the children discovered the happiness of helping, being appreciated, and contributing to their community.
It was more than learning about “work”—it was a day to turn compassion into action.

2025年11月8日（土）、カリヒ・ユニオン教会（Kalihi Union Church）のキッチンが、子どもたちの笑顔と声でいっぱいになりました。
この日、12名の子どもたちが「コミュニティヘルパー」として参加し、“誰かのために働くことの喜び”を体験しました。
🍱 Touch A Heartとの特別コラボレーション
今回のワークショップは、ハワイの自立支援NPO 「Touch A Heart」 との特別コラボレーション。
講師には、エグゼクティブ・ディレクターの ロビン・クマベ（Robin Kumabe） さん、ディレクター・オブ・オペレーションズ＆トレーニングの コリン・クマベ（Colin Kumabe） さん、
そして日本人スタッフの マイコ・エスピリトゥ（Maiko Espiritu） さん、ボランティアの エマさん（Emma） をお迎えしました。
子どもたちは、「思いやりの心を届ける仕事」をテーマに、食を通して人と人をつなぐ活動を体験しました。
🍪 クッキーづくりとミールボックス準備体験
子どもたちは髪をまとめ、ヘアネットを装着。
手洗いをしっかりと済ませてから手袋をつけ、緊張とワクワクが入り混じる表情でキッチンに一歩足を踏み入れました。
最初の体験は「Baker’s Heart Hawaiiクッキーづくり」。
ハワイの木 キアヴェ（Kiawe） のさやを粉にした特製素材を使い、生地をてのひらで押して形を作っていきます。
「同じ大きさにするの、むずかしい〜！」という声が上がりながらも、どの子も真剣なまなざし。
その生地を、コリンさんが手際よくオーブンに入れて焼き上げていきます。
クッキーを焼いている間に、すでにオーブンで温めていたボランティアさんへの食事ベイクドスパゲッティを取り出し、子どもたちはチーズをかけて仕上げます。 キッチンの中では、小さなヘルパーたちの頼もしい姿が輝いていました。
⛪ 教会見学と特別メッセージ
その後、子どもたちは教会を見学。
牧師から温かいメッセージをいただき、一緒に記念撮影をしました。
“Community”という言葉の意味を、子どもたちなりに感じ取る貴重なひとときとなりました。
キッチンに戻ると、ちょうどクッキーが焼きあがったところ！
ふわっと広がる甘い香りに思わず笑顔がこぼれ、待ちに待った試食タイム。
サクサクのクッキーをほおばりながら、「おいしい！」と満面の笑みを浮かべる姿が印象的でした。
📝 ワークノートでふりかえり
活動のあとは、2階の部屋に戻って「お仕事ノート」を開きました。
「クッキーをあげたときうれしかった」「またお手伝いしたい」など、子どもたちは一人ひとりの言葉で今日の思いを綴ります。
絵を描く子もいれば、丁寧に文字で感想を書く子も。
最後に MIRAI HANAのステッカー付き終了証 と Baker’s Heart Hawaiiのクッキー を受け取り、うれしそうな笑顔で「Mahalo！」。
🤝 「あげる」「わかちあう」ことを学ぶ
この日はちょうど、教会のボランティアさんたちが普段お世話になっている施設を掃除したり、芝を刈ったりするコミュニティサービスの日でもありました。子どもたちは、焼きたてのクッキーをそのボランティアさんたちに直接手渡し。
「Thank you!」「You’re welcome!」と笑顔で言葉を交わしながら、自分の手で作ったものを人に渡す喜びを感じていました。
受け取った方が「This made my day!（今日いちばんうれしい出来事だよ）」と笑顔で話すと、子どもたちの表情も自然と誇らしげに。
“つくる”だけでなく、“わかちあう”ことで生まれるあたたかい気持ちを、肌で感じた瞬間でした。
💞 心をつなぐワークショップ
今回のプログラムを通して、子どもたちは「助け合うこと」「感謝されること」「自分の手で社会に貢献できること」の喜びを体感しました。 “仕事”を学ぶだけでなく、“思いやりをかたちにする” ことの大切さを、笑顔とともに実感した一日。
