ARSカフェ × MIRAI HANA – こども仕事体験ワークショップ LITE #001：アーティスト編（講師：小野裕人）活動報告

On Monday, October 6, 2025, ten children participated in an artist experience workshop at ARS Cafe on Monsarrat Avenue. This was the first session of the Keiki Job Experience LITE series, a 90-minute hands-on program. Fukuoka-born contemporary artist Yuto Ono served as the instructor on the final day before returning to Japan.
Monsarrat Avenue, located at the foot of Diamond Head, is known for its scenic view and local cafés. ARS Café features an in-house art gallery where visitors can enjoy both artwork and coffee in one space. Mr. Ono has been exhibiting there since 2022, and this was his third solo show at the gallery.
Most of the participating children enjoy drawing, and some aspire to become artists themselves. A few participants joined from neighboring islands such as Kauaʻi and Maui during their fall break. Surrounded by Mr. Ono’s artwork in the gallery, the children learned about art techniques and the work of a professional artist.
During the introduction, Mr. Ono shared photos and spoke about what inspired him to pursue art, as well as the experiences that shaped his creative path. He showed images of his studio in Japan and short videos of his production process, while explaining the differences between painters and contemporary artists.
As he introduced several of his pieces, Mr. Ono explained how some works were created—such as a large rose painting that began with spilled paint from a child’s accident, and glitter purchased from a local Target store. The stories helped the children understand that there is no fixed rule in art and that creativity can emerge from unexpected moments.
The hands-on portion of the workshop involved coloring a tote bag printed with a dog illustration designed by Mr. Ono, using a set of 15 POSCA markers. Before starting, the children asked questions such as, “What kind of dog is this?” Mr. Ono showed them photos of his own dog, who served as the model, and explained how an artwork can become a digital design and eventually a product—introducing the idea of art as part of a creative business process.
After a brief demonstration on how to use the markers and create gradients, the children immersed themselves in their work. Some began coloring confidently, while others took time to select colors carefully or experimented with multiple layers of blending. Each child approached the task differently, focusing deeply on their individual creative process.
When finished, the children signed their own tote bags and added Mr. Ono’s signature beside theirs to complete the collaborative piece. They also received dog- and cat-themed stickers designed by the artist as souvenirs, followed by a group photo session.
This workshop gave the children the opportunity to observe the work of a professional artist, explore creative techniques, and express their own ideas through art.

2025年10月6日（月）、モンサラット通りにあるアースカフェにてこども10人がアーティスト体験をしました。今回は時間を１時間半としたKeiki Job Experience LITE 第１回目で、福岡出身の現代アーティスト、小野裕人さんが日本帰国直前の最終日にワークショップの講師をしてくださいました。
壮大なダイヤモンドヘッドが目の前にそびえるモンサラット通り。ダイヤモンドヘッドを眺めながらおしゃれなカフェでおいしいコーヒーやランチができると、地元ファンも多いエリア。アースカフェにはアートギャラリーがあり、アートを鑑賞しながらコーヒーや食事を楽しめる素敵なお店です。小野さんも2022年からこのアートギャラリーで個展をされていて、今回が3回目だそうです。
参加したこどもたちは、ほぼ全員絵を描くことが好きで、実際にアーティストを目指しているこどもや、秋休みを利用してカウアイ島やマウイ島からオアフに来ている参加者の姿がありました。カフェのアートギャラリーで小野さんの作品に囲まれながら、直接アート手法を学ぶという、とても優雅な１時間半を過ごしました。
小野さんの自己紹介では、写真を見ながらアーティストを目指したきっかけとなったエピソードを聞き、それが5歳の時だったこと、そして理由が「自分の絵が上手だとお母さんが喜んでくれるから」という答えに、こどもたちは感動したようです。その後、小野さんの日本のアトリエの写真、つくられた動画、アースカフェのギャラリーの作品を見ながらアーティストの仕事内容、画家とアーティストの違いなどについても学びました。
個展に飾ってある作品にあるグリッターは実はアメリカのターゲットで買ったもの、一番大きなバラの作品は、こどもが倒してしまったペンキが別のアートに生まれ変わったもの、アートには決まった型がないと聞き、こどもたちの想像力が一気に高揚。そして、いよいよアート作品制作。今日は小野さんのデザインした犬のスケッチが印刷されたトートバッグに１５色のポスカマーカーで色を塗るというお仕事体験をしました。
色を塗り始める前に「この犬はどんな犬？」と、こどもらしい質問から始まり、小野さんがモデルとなった愛犬の写真をスマホで見せ、歓声が。自分の犬がアートになり、それがデジタル化され、商品になるという、ビジネスの流れも学べました。実は小野さんは「宮古島セーブザアニマルズ」という犬猫の保護団体にご自分で作成されたカレンダーの売り上げを寄付されているというアーティストでもあります。
小野さんにポスカマーカーの使い方とグラデーションの作り方を教えてもらったあと、こどもたちは、自分の作業にしばらく没頭しました。さっと色を選んで塗り始めるタイプ、かなり悩んで慎重に塗るタイプ、何度もグラデーションをやり直すなど、手法はさまざまでしたが、小野さんはどんなことでも、こどもがすることを「いいねー」と言いながら、後ろからそっと修正したり、アドバイスをしたり。やさしさが溢れていました。完成した作品に自分のサインを入れ、小野さんの直筆サインを足して二人のコラボ作品とし、記念撮影。そして、小野さんデザインの猫と犬のステッカーのお土産をもらって、大喜び。最後の感想では、小野さんも「楽しかった」と一言。あっという間の１時間半でした。
今回参加したこどもたちの多くは小野さんの人生を変えた５歳以上ですが、このお仕事経験がきっかけで自分の絵を描く力に自信をつけて、将来アーティストを目指して、そしてこの貴重な経験をしたアースカフェで個展を開くこどもが出てくるといいですね。
