cakeM × MIRAI HANA – Kids Job Experience #005: Cake Designer Edition
MIRAI HANA 第5回こども仕事体験ワークショップ報告「cakeM、ケーキデザイナー編」（日本語は英語の下にあります）
On October 5, 2025, twenty-four children had the unique opportunity to experience the world of a “Cake Designer” at the charming cake shop cakeM in Ala Moana.
cakeM is owned by Megumi, a talented cake designer loved by many fans for her beautiful and heartfelt creations. Due to her popularity, this workshop quickly filled up, leading to both morning and afternoon sessions with twelve children each. With participants even joining from neighboring islands, and with customers at cakeM and its adjoining café stopping by to watch, the event truly reflected the spirit of community and connection that MIRAI HANA aims to foster.
It’s safe to say—there are very few children who don’t love cake.
Inside cakeM, display cases were filled with Megumi’s delightful cakes, the sweet aroma of cream filled the air, and children in chef hats began their day with big smiles and excitement.
For many children, cakes are something special—something shared on birthdays, holidays, and celebrations, often made by their mothers or grandmothers, and sometimes even together as a family activity.
But what does it really mean to “design” a cake?
At the start of the workshop, Megumi explained,
“A cake is something that conveys feelings. The job of a cake designer is to turn those feelings into shape.”
The children listened with curiosity and wonder. They looked through photos of Megumi’s many creations—over a thousand cakes—and played a quiz guessing who each cake was made for, what message it carried, and what story it told. Through this game, they learned how emotion and creativity can take form.
Next, the children began their own creative journey—designing and decorating their very own small cakes.
Before getting started, they wrote in their “workbook” who they wanted to make the cake for and what feelings they wanted to express. Then they sketched out their design ideas—from simple pencil sketches to colorful illustrations using markers and colored pencils. Some imagined fruit-shaped cakes, others drew animals or video game characters—so unique that Megumi smiled and said, “That might be a little tricky... but let’s see if we can do it!”
Afterward, Megumi introduced the decorating materials she had prepared. Tables were covered with colorful buttercream, a variety of sprinkles, cute fondant shapes, and fresh berries. The children’s excitement instantly grew.
After watching Megumi’s piping demonstration, they each started decorating in their own style.
Some steps turned out to be trickier than expected, but Megumi patiently guided each child, helping everyone finish a truly beautiful cake. Watching them, the adults were amazed—how could so many different creations come from the same set of ingredients?
Then came a fun game: everyone looked at each other’s cakes and guessed who the cakes were made for and what feelings they represented. Some proudly said, “It turned out just like my drawing!” while others admitted, “It came out a bit different from my design.”
No matter the outcome, their smiles told stories of friendship, gratitude, and love—and Megumi rewarded every participant with a passing grade and warm praise.
At the end, Megumi asked,
“If you were to sell the cake you made today, how much would it be?”
Children called out, “Ten dollars! Twenty! Fifty! One hundred!”
But Megumi replied,
“You can’t really put a price on it.”
To everyone’s surprise, she gifted each child a special coupon—a shortcake from cakeM for their next birthday.
A truly heartfelt gift filled with her love and appreciation for their hard work.
As the workshop came to a close, one could only imagine how each child enjoyed their cake later at home—sharing it with the special person they had in mind, perhaps tasting it a little differently this time, with meaning baked right in.
Both the morning and afternoon sessions were filled with smiles—so much so that customers and passersby stopped to take photos.
Almost every child wrote the same word in their reflection sheet at the end:
“Happy.”
We hope that through this experience, more children discovered the joy of creating something that makes people happy—and the magic of being a cake designer.

2025年10月5日（日）、アラモアナにあるかわいいケーキ屋さん「cakeM」で、こども24人が「ケーキデザイナー」のお仕事体験をしました。
「cakeM」は、ケーキデザイナーのめぐみさんが経営するお店です。めぐみさんが作るケーキのファンの多さから、このワークショップはあっという間に満席となり、午前の部と午後の部を実施し、それぞれ12人のこどもが参加しました。今回は離島からの参加者も加わり、また「cakeM」や併設するカフェに来られるお客様から見守られ、MIRAI HANAの広がりとローカルとのつながりを感じるワークショップとなりました。
ケーキが好きではないこどもは、おそらくいないでしょう。cakeMの中にはめぐみさんが作ったおいしそうなケーキがケースに並び、クリームの甘い香りがただよい、コック帽をかぶったこどもたちは、最初からハッピーな気分でスタートしました。
こどもたちにとってケーキは誕生日、ホリデー、お祝いなどの特別な時に食べるもの、お母さんやおばあちゃんが作ってくれるもの、そして時々一緒に作ったりするものとのことでした。では、みんなが好きな「ケーキをデザインする」というのは、どのような仕事なのでしょうか。
ワークショップの最初に、めぐみさんから「ケーキは想いを伝えるもの」、その「想いを形にする」のが「ケーキデザイナーの仕事」と聞いたこどもたちは、「へえー」と驚きの表情。めぐみさんが作った1,000個以上のケーキの中から選りすぐりの作品の写真をいくつか見て、こどもたちはそれぞれのケーキが、だれのために、どんな目的で、どんな想いを形にしたものなのかを当てるクイズをしながら、想いを形にするコツを学びました。
その後、こどもたちは小さいホールケーキの「デザイン」と「デコレーション」の２つの体験をしましたが、その前に「今日だれのためにケーキを作るのか」、「その人にどんな想いを伝えるのか」を自分のお仕事手帳に書き、「ケーキデザイン」の目的を決めました。そして、その目的を達成できるようなケーキデコレーションのイメージを描きました。ケーキデザインは十人十色。えんぴつだけのスケッチ、色鉛筆やカラーペンを使ったカラフルなデザイン、果物形、動物やゲームのキャラクターの飾りなど、思わずめぐみさんが「難しい、できるかな」とつぶやくようなケーキのデザインも生まれました。
次にめぐみさんが準備したデコレーションの材料について説明があり、こどもたちは自分がデザインしたケーキを、目の前にある材料だけでどのようにデコレーションするかを考えました。カラフルなバタークリームの絞り、トッピング用のいろいろなスプリンクル、かわいい形のフォンダンや新鮮なベリー３種がテーブルに並び、こどもたちのモチベーションが一気に高まりました。最初にめぐみさんのパイピング（クリームの絞り）のデモンストレーションを見た後は、みな自分スタイルでどんどんデコレーションをしていきました。簡単そうで簡単ではない作業もけっこうあり、めぐみさんはその都度、困っているこどもをサポートして、全員すばらしいケーキを完成させることができました。同じ材料を使っても、これほど違うケーキができるのか、と見ている大人はこどもの想像力に驚くばかりでした。
そして、それぞれのケーキを見て、だれのためのものか、どんな想いがあるかを当てるゲームもしました。「デザインしたものと、だいたい同じものができた」という報告もありましたが、「デザインしたのと、実際作ったのがかなり変わってしまった」という正直な意見も出ていました。どんな作品であれ、報告するこどもたちの表情からは、ベストフレンドへの友情、両親への感謝の気持ちなど、ケーキにこめたまっすぐな気持ちが伝わってきて、めぐみさんからは合格をいただきました。
最後に「今日自分が作ったケーキをお店で売るなら、いくらにする？」とめぐみさんからの質問に、こどもたちからは「10ドル、20ドル、50ドル、100ドル」、といろいろな値段が出てきましたが、めぐみさんは「値段はつけられない」という答えで、なんと次の誕生日にCakeMのショートケーキがもらえるという素敵なプレゼントをくださいました。そのケーキには今日参加したこどもたちへのめぐみさんの想いがこめられているのだと思います。
ワークショップの後、こどもたちは自分がデザインしてデコレーションしたケーキを家に持って帰って、想いを伝えたかった人と一緒に食べたのでしょうか。どんな会話をしながら食べたのでしょうか。このケーキは今まで食べたケーキと何か違う食べ方をしたのでしょうか。
午前の部も午後の部もCakeMのお客様、通りすがりの人、保護者の方々も思わず写真を撮りたくなるような楽しく、美しく、おいしそうな光景でした。こどもたちも最後の感想でも、ほとんどが「ハッピー」と書いていました。人を幸せにするケーキの魅力、そして、それを作るケーキデザイナーの仕事の魅力を感じてくれるこどもが増えたことを心から望んでいます。

保護者アンケートでは、80％の方が「とても満足」、20％の方が「満足」と回答し、全体的に非常に高い満足度となりました。
