MIRAI HANA 第27回こども仕事体験ワークショップ報告「ʻŌlelo Community Media メディアプロデューサー編」

On Sunday, September 20, 2026, 12 children participated in MIRAI HANA’s first-ever Media Producer Job Experience Workshop at ʻŌlelo Community Media in Honolulu.
MIRAI HANA has collaborated with a wide variety of local businesses to introduce children to different careers, but this was our first workshop focused on the media industry.
For this special experience, the children stepped inside a real television studio, learned about the many jobs involved in media production, and worked together to record a video.
🎥 Discovering ʻŌlelo Community Media
The workshop began with an introduction to ʻŌlelo Community Media, a nonprofit organization that helps people across Hawaiʻi share their stories through video.
Founded in 1989, ʻŌlelo provides media education, professional equipment, and production facilities. It also works with schools and communities to help people of all ages develop media skills and share their voices.
Guided by its kuleana of creating and sharing stories “by Hawaiʻi · for Hawaiʻi · to Hawaiʻi,” ʻŌlelo showed the children that media is more than entertainment—it is a way to connect people and tell stories that matter.
The children also learned an important message from the ʻŌlelo team: Use media for good.
🎬 Mini Studio – Becoming a Media Production Team
After learning about community media, the children stepped into the Mini Studio to experience the production process themselves.
They learned about the different professionals involved in creating a television program, including presenters, camera operators, directors, producers, and control room staff.
Some children prepared what they wanted to say in front of the camera, while others experienced the technical and behind-the-scenes work involved in filming and producing a program.
The children took turns in different roles and worked together to record their own video production.
They discovered that every role matters and that creating a program requires the entire team to communicate and work together.
🎛️ Behind the Scenes: The Control Room
The children also explored the control room, where the production team works behind the scenes to coordinate a television program.
During the closing discussion, the ʻŌlelo team explained that when everyone talks at the same time, it becomes difficult for the people in the control room to understand what is happening.
That is why each person needs to focus on their assigned role and listen carefully to the director or producer.
This lesson connected closely with one of ʻŌlelo’s core values, “Be One Team”—collaborating, sharing, and helping one another.
Through the experience, the children learned that communication, listening, responsibility, and teamwork are just as important as knowing how to operate professional equipment.
📹 Learning to Operate a Professional Video Camera
Another exciting part of the workshop was learning how to operate a professional video camera.
The ʻŌlelo team introduced the children to the equipment and asked them to guess how much the camera cost.
After hearing several guesses, the children were surprised to learn that it cost approximately $17,000!
This led to an important reminder about handling professional equipment with care.
With guidance from the ʻŌlelo team, the children took turns practicing three basic camera movements:
Pan: Moving the camera left and right.
Tilt: Moving the camera up and down.
Zoom: Making the subject appear closer or farther away.
They also learned about the camera’s fluid head and how it helps create smooth movements.
As they practiced framing their subjects and adjusting the camera, the children began to understand how camera operators create clear and visually engaging shots.
Some children also asked questions about microphones, recording, and how to get started as a YouTuber.
Their questions showed how the experience was connecting professional media production with the kinds of videos and digital media they encounter in everyday life.
📝 Reflecting on Their Experience
Toward the end of the workshop, the children completed their MIRAI HANA My Job workbooks.
They reflected on the jobs they had experienced, what they learned, how they felt, and their favorite moments from the day.
The group also gathered for photos to remember their experience together.
During the closing discussion, the ʻŌlelo team praised the children for their work and encouraged them to continue exploring media opportunities at school and in their communities.
🌟 What the Children Learned
Through this workshop, the children discovered that television and video production involve many different jobs, skills, and responsibilities.
They experienced both sides of the camera, learned how professional equipment works, and discovered why everyone on a production team needs to communicate and work together.
Most importantly, they learned that media can be a powerful tool for sharing ideas and giving people a voice.
ʻŌlelo’s commitment to empowering others, supporting young people, and working together as one team was reflected throughout the experience.
We hope this workshop inspires the children to look at television and digital media in a new way—and perhaps one day use their own creativity and technical skills to share stories that matter to them and their communities.

2026年9月20日（日）、ホノルルの ʻŌlelo Community Media にて、12名の子どもたちが参加し、MIRAI HANA初開催となるこども仕事体験ワークショップ「メディアプロデューサー編」を開催しました。
MIRAI HANAでは、これまでさまざまなローカル企業と協力し、子どもたちに多様な仕事を紹介してきましたが、メディア業界をテーマにした仕事体験は今回が初めてです。
今回の舞台は、本物のテレビスタジオ。
子どもたちは、メディア制作に関わるさまざまな仕事について学び、実際に制作チームの一員となって映像の収録に挑戦しました。
🎥 ʻŌlelo Community Mediaとは？
ワークショップは、ʻŌlelo Community Mediaの紹介から始まりました。
ʻŌleloは、ハワイの人々が映像を通して自分たちのストーリーを発信できるようサポートしている非営利団体です。
1989年に設立され、現在はメディア教育や専門機材・制作施設の提供に加え、学校や地域と連携し、幅広い世代の人々が映像制作を学び、自分たちの声を届ける機会をつくっています。
ʻŌleloが大切にしているのは、「by Hawaiʻi · for Hawaiʻi · to Hawaiʻi」という理念です。
子どもたちは、メディアが単なる娯楽ではなく、人と人をつなぎ、大切なストーリーを伝える手段でもあることを学びました。
そして、ʻŌleloのスタッフから 「メディアの力を良いことに使おう」 という大切なメッセージも教えていただきました。
🎬 Mini Studioで番組制作に挑戦！
コミュニティメディアについて学んだ後は、いよいよ子どもたち自身が制作チームの一員となり、映像制作に挑戦しました。
まずは、番組制作に関わるさまざまな仕事について学びました。
カメラの前に立つプレゼンターだけでなく、カメラオペレーター、ディレクター、プロデューサー、コントロールルームのスタッフなど、多くの人たちがそれぞれの役割を担い、一つの番組をつくっています。
子どもたちは、出演者としてカメラの前で話す内容を準備したり、撮影や番組制作の舞台裏を体験したりしながら、チームで協力して映像を収録しました。
実際に制作に取り組むことで、一つの映像作品を完成させるためには、それぞれが自分の役割を理解し、協力することが大切だと学びました。
🎛️ コントロールルームのお仕事
子どもたちは、番組制作の舞台裏を支えるコントロールルームも体験しました。
カメラの前で出演者が話している間、コントロールルームでは、制作チームが番組の進行を確認し、役割ごとに協力して仕事を進めています。
最後の振り返りでは、ʻŌleloのスタッフから、みんなが同時に話してしまうと、コントロールルームでは誰が何を言っているのか分からなくなってしまうというお話がありました。
そのため、自分の役割に集中し、ディレクターやプロデューサーの指示をよく聞くことが大切です。
これは、ʻŌleloが大切にしている価値観の一つ、「Be One Team（チームとして協力する）」にもつながっています。
子どもたちは、専門機材を操作する技術だけでなく、コミュニケーション力、相手の話を聞く力、責任感、チームワークが番組制作に欠かせないことを学びました。
📹 プロ仕様のビデオカメラを操作！
今回のワークショップでは、プロ仕様のビデオカメラの操作にも挑戦しました。
スタッフから「このカメラはいくらだと思う？」と質問されると、子どもたちは次々と予想を発表。その価格が約17,000ドルだと聞くと、驚きの声が上がりました！
高価な専門機材だからこそ、丁寧に取り扱うことの大切さも教えていただきました。
続いて、子どもたちは順番にカメラを操作し、撮影の基本となる3つの動きを練習しました。
Pan（パン）： カメラを左右に動かす。
Tilt（チルト）： カメラを上下に動かす。
Zoom（ズーム）： 被写体を大きく、または小さく映す。
さらに、カメラを滑らかに動かすための「フルードヘッド」についても学びました。
スタッフにサポートしてもらいながら、子どもたちはカメラを左右・上下に動かしたり、被写体を画面に収めたりする練習に挑戦しました。
マイクや録画方法について質問したり、「YouTuberになるにはどうすればいいの？」と尋ねたりする子もいて、映像制作への興味がさらに広がる時間となりました。
📝 今日の仕事体験を振り返る
ワークショップの終盤には、MIRAI HANAの My Job ワークブックを使って、今日体験した仕事や学んだこと、楽しかったこと、感じたことを振り返りました。
また、みんなで記念写真を撮影し、今日の体験を思い出に残しました。
最後にʻŌleloのスタッフから、子どもたちの今日の取り組みを褒めていただき、学校や地域でもメディアについて学ぶ機会を見つけ、ぜひ挑戦を続けてほしいというお話がありました。
🌟 子どもたちが学んだこと
今回の体験を通して、子どもたちは、テレビや映像の制作には多くの仕事があり、それぞれの役割を担う人たちが協力することで一つの作品が完成することを学びました。
カメラの前に立つ仕事と、舞台裏で番組を支える仕事の両方に触れ、実際の機材の操作にも挑戦しました。
そして、自分の役割を大切にし、相手の話をよく聞き、チームで協力することが、メディア制作には欠かせないことを体感しました。
さらに、メディアには自分の考えや地域のストーリーを多くの人へ届ける力があることも学びました。
ʻŌleloが大切にしている「Empower Others（人々の可能性を広げる）」や「Be One Team」という価値観が、今回の子どもたちの体験にもつながっています。
このワークショップが、子どもたちにとってテレビや映像を見る目が変わるきっかけとなり、いつか自分たちの創造力や技術を使って、大切なストーリーを発信することにも興味を持ってもらえたら嬉しく思います。
