KAIMUKI SHOKUDO × MIRAI HANA – Kids Job Experience #024: Restaurant Edition
On September 13, 2026, 12 children joined the 24th MIRAI HANA Kids Job Experience Workshop at Kaimuki Shokudo, where they stepped behind the scenes of a real restaurant and experienced several different roles involved in restaurant operations.
This workshop was brought back by popular request following the success of our first Restaurant Edition in 2025.
Our first collaboration with Kaimuki Shokudo was MIRAI HANA Workshop #002. One year and 22 workshops later, we were excited to return for Workshop #024.
The workshop was originally scheduled for August 16, but due to severe weather, it was postponed to September 13 with the kind cooperation of the Kaimuki Shokudo team.
Learning How a Restaurant Works
The morning began before Kaimuki Shokudo opened to the public.
The children learned that working in a restaurant involves much more than preparing food.
From welcoming guests and taking orders to preparing drinks, communicating with the kitchen, serving customers, cleaning up, and working as a team, every role is connected.
Throughout the morning, the children experienced how communication and teamwork help a restaurant run smoothly.
Restaurant Operations Rotation
The children rotated through several different stations to experience restaurant work from multiple perspectives.
Each group had the opportunity to try different responsibilities and see how the front of the restaurant and the kitchen work together.
Order Taking
The children practiced taking customer orders and learned how important it is to listen carefully and enter information accurately.
They discovered that taking an order is not simply writing something down.
It requires listening, confirming details, communicating clearly, and making sure the correct information reaches the kitchen.
For many of the children, it was their first time seeing what happens after a customer places an order.
Kitchen Tour
Next, the children explored the kitchen and other areas that customers do not normally get to see.
They learned how the workspace is organized, how staff prepare before opening, and how different stations support one another during service.
Seeing the restaurant before opening gave the children a special opportunity to understand how much preparation takes place before the first customer arrives.
Customer Experience, POS & Drink Making
The children also switched roles and became customers.
Through role play, they experienced both sides of restaurant service while learning how the POS system connects customer orders with the kitchen.
At the bar counter, they also had the chance to make their own drinks.
They added syrup, ice, and soda from the dispenser, mixed everything together, and completed their drinks.
After finishing, they brought their cups to the dishwasher and helped clean up.
This gave them the chance to experience not only preparing and serving, but also the important final step of cleaning and resetting.
Making Temaki Sushi
One of the highlights of the workshop was making temaki sushi.
The children first learned the meaning of the Japanese word “temaki.”
“Te” means “hand,” and “maki” means “roll,” so temaki means “hand roll.”
They then learned how to make their own.
First, they placed the nori in their hand and added a small amount of rice slightly toward one side.
Next, they added sausage, cucumber, and takuan.
Finally, they rolled the nori from the edge to create a shape that looked like a small bouquet.
The children quickly improved as they practiced, and some made several rolls.
One child even made five!
It was also wonderful to see children who normally do not eat many vegetables adding cucumber and takuan to their temaki and enjoying everything they made.
Trying Soba
At the children’s request, they also had the chance to try soba.
For some, it was their very first time eating Japanese buckwheat noodles.
They learned a little about what soba is and enjoyed tasting it together.
Kaimuki Shokudo is also known for its soba, and during the New Year season they offer toshikoshi soba, a traditional Japanese noodle dish eaten at the end of the year.
This became another fun opportunity for the children to experience Japanese food and culture.
Learning Through Real Experience
At MIRAI HANA, we believe children learn differently when they are able to step into a real workplace and try the job themselves.
A restaurant is a familiar place for most children, but this time they experienced it from the other side.
They took orders.
They used the POS system.
They toured the kitchen.
They made drinks.
They prepared temaki sushi.
They tried soba.
They cleaned up.
And most importantly, they worked together.
We hope the next time they visit a restaurant, they will notice a little more of what is happening behind the scenes and appreciate the many people, skills, and small steps that come together to create a great dining experience.
From Workshop #002 to #024
Returning to Kaimuki Shokudo one year later was especially meaningful for MIRAI HANA.
When we first collaborated in 2025, Restaurant Edition was only our second Kids Job Experience Workshop.
This time, we returned for Workshop #024.
While MIRAI HANA has grown and the program has continued to evolve, our purpose remains the same: to connect children with real people, real workplaces, and real experiences in their own community.
A very special thank you to Ryan, Brendan, Deanna, Rachel, Paulo, Maiko, and the entire Kaimuki Shokudo team for warmly welcoming the children and sharing the world of restaurant work with them.
MIRAI HANA
Workshop #002
