cakeM × MIRAI HANA – Kids Job Experience #026: Cake Designer Edition

On September 7, 2026, 22 children joined the 26th MIRAI HANA Kids Job Experience Workshop at cakeM, where they stepped into the world of a professional Cake Designer.

This workshop was brought back by popular request following the success of our first Cake Designer Edition in 2025.

Even before registration opened, we received many inquiries about the workshop. As with the previous event, we offered both a morning and an afternoon session, and both sessions sold out shortly after registration opened.

Despite the unsettled weather, we were very grateful to welcome 12 children in the morning and 10 in the afternoon.

This year, instead of designing one whole cake, each child created a collection of six individually decorated cupcakes.

“A cake is a way to express your feelings.”

The workshop began with Megumi Albritton, Owner and Cake Designer of cakeM, introducing the children to her profession.

Megumi shared the idea at the heart of her work:

“A cake is something that conveys feelings. A Cake Designer’s job is to turn those feelings into shape.”

Before thinking about colors or decorations, the children were encouraged to think about who they were creating for and what feeling they wanted to express.

Kitchen Tour & Tool Quiz

The children first explored the cakeM kitchen and learned about the tools and equipment used by professional Cake Designers.

They also took part in a Baking Tool Quiz, identifying tools such as a whisk, rolling pin, rubber spatula, sifter, and piping bag, and learning what each one is used for.

Cookie Cutting

Next, the children cut out cookies that would later become part of their cupcake decorations.

While the cookies were baking, they moved on to planning their cupcake designs.

Designing Their Cupcakes

Each child planned their own six-cupcake collection, thinking about colors, themes, and who the cupcakes were for.

They first put their ideas onto paper before moving on to the decorating process.

Although everyone worked with similar materials, each finished design was completely different.

Decorating Time

After watching Megumi demonstrate professional piping techniques, the children began decorating their cupcakes with buttercream, toppings, and the cookies they had made earlier.

Some designs changed as they worked, giving the children a chance to experience an important part of creative work:

Think. Try. Adjust. Create.

Designing the Cake Box

The children also decorated their own cake boxes with drawings and illustrations, creating original packaging for their cupcake collections.

From the cupcakes to the box, each child created something that was truly their own.

Taking Their Creations Home

At the end of the workshop, each child packed six decorated cupcakes into their personalized cake box to take home.

Across the two sessions, 22 young Cake Designers created 22 unique cupcake collections.

Through the workshop, the children experienced the process of taking an idea from:

thought → design → creation → presentation

We hope this experience showed them that creativity is not only about making something beautiful, but also about expressing feelings and turning ideas into something that can be shared.

A very special thank you to Megumi Albritton and Vingy for sharing the world of a professional Cake Designer with the children.
