TEN TOMORROW × MIRAI HANA – Kids Job Experience #022: Fashion Designer Edition
MIRAI HANA 第22回こども仕事体験ワークショップ報告「TEN TOMORROW ファッションデザイナー編」（日本語は英語の下にあります）
On Sunday, August 9, 2026, thirteen children participated in the MIRAI HANA Kids Job Experience – Fashion Designer Edition at TEN TOMORROW in Kaimukī.
Back by popular demand following our first collaboration last year, this workshop gave children another opportunity to step into the world of fashion and experience the many steps involved in turning an idea into a real product.
Through hands-on activities with real fabrics, fashion sketching, sewing demonstrations, and a visit to the TEN TOMORROW shop, the children discovered that being a fashion designer involves much more than simply drawing clothes.
🍋 Welcome, Lemonade & Franky
The workshop began with a warm welcome from Summer and the TEN TOMORROW team, along with a special greeting from Franky, Summer’s dog and TEN TOMORROW’s beloved shop dog.
The children also received refreshing lemonade from Daily Whisk Matcha, the matcha café owned by Summer.
With lemonade in hand, the children were ready to begin their fashion designer experience.
👗 What Does a Fashion Designer Do?
The children first learned about the work of a fashion designer from Summer Shiigi, owner and designer of TEN TOMORROW.
In addition to running the local Kaimukī-based fashion brand TEN TOMORROW, Summer is also a community business leader who helps lead Keep it Kaimuki, an event that supports and celebrates local businesses in the neighborhood.
Summer explained that creating a fashion brand involves much more than simply drawing clothes.
Before a design becomes a finished product and reaches a customer, many different people and skills are involved, including design, pattern making, sewing, production, and sales.
Through Summer’s talk, the children learned that fashion is not created by one person alone—it is brought to life through the work and teamwork of many people.
✂️ Working with Real Fabric
The first hands-on activity began with real fabric.
Each child selected a favorite fabric and placed a pattern template on top. They carefully traced around the template with a pen, learning how fabric must first be measured and prepared before it can be turned into a finished product.
Next came cutting.
Following the lines they had drawn, the children carefully cut their fabric with scissors. Although it may look simple, cutting fabric accurately requires concentration, patience, and careful handwork.
It was an opportunity to experience one of the important steps that happens before a fashion item ever reaches a sewing machine.
🧵 Sewing Demonstration
Once the fabric was ready, Mari and Kaycee demonstrated how sewing machines are used to bring the pieces together.
The children watched closely as the fabric they had selected, traced, and cut began to transform into a finished item right in front of them.
By experiencing the process step by step, the children could see that creating even one fashion item requires many different skills and stages.
👗 Becoming Fashion Designers
Next, it was time for the children to use their imaginations.
Using croquis—figure templates commonly used by fashion students and professionals—the children created their own original fashion designs.
Although everyone started with the same type of template, the finished designs were completely different. Colors, shapes, styles, and ideas varied from child to child, showing how creativity and individuality are an important part of fashion design.
🌺 Creating Original Aloha Prints
The children then explored something especially connected to fashion in Hawai‘i: aloha shirt print design.
Using plants, colors, shapes, and their own ideas for inspiration, each child created an original print.
This activity helped them discover that fashion designers do not only think about the shape of clothing—they also consider the colors, patterns, and textiles that give each piece its unique personality.
🛍️ Learning at the TEN TOMORROW Shop
For the final part of the workshop, everyone moved from the design studio to the TEN TOMORROW shop.
During the shop tour, the children saw how the creative process they had experienced in the studio connects to actual products displayed and sold in a real store.
They also learned more about fabrics and where different materials come from, including how some fabrics are made using materials derived from plants.
Instead of simply looking at a piece of clothing and thinking about how it looks, the children were encouraged to think deeper:
Where does the material come from?
How does it become fabric?
How does that fabric become a product we see in a store?
Surrounded by TEN TOMORROW’s clothing and locally created items, there was plenty to catch everyone’s attention!
🌟 What the Children Learned
Through this workshop, the children experienced many different parts of the fashion design process:
Working with real fabric
Using a pattern and tracing fabric
Cutting fabric carefully
Learning how sewing machines are used
Creating original fashion designs using croquis
Designing aloha-inspired prints
Learning about fabrics and materials
Seeing how designs become products in a real shop
Most importantly, they discovered that fashion design is a combination of creativity, craftsmanship, knowledge, and teamwork.
An idea may begin with a drawing, but many steps—and many people—are involved before that idea becomes something we can actually wear or use.
We hope our thirteen young designers continue to create, experiment, and develop their own unique ideas—and perhaps one day, we will see their own designs in a Hawai‘i shop!

2026年8月9日（日）、カイムキにあるローカルブランド「TEN TOMORROW」で、13人のこどもたちが「ファッションデザイナー」のお仕事を体験しました。
昨年に続き2回目となったTEN TOMORROW × MIRAI HANAの「ファッションデザイナー編」。
今回も、実際の布を使った制作、ファッションデザイン、ミシンのデモンストレーション、そしてTEN TOMORROWのショップ見学を通して、「アイデア」がどのように実際の「商品」になっていくのかを学びました。
ファッションデザイナーのお仕事は、ただ洋服の絵を描くだけではありません。今回は、普段何気なく見ている洋服やファッションアイテムの裏側にある、さまざまなお仕事を体験しました。
🍋 レモネード＆Frankyのお出迎え
まずはSummerさんとTEN TOMORROWの皆さん、そしてSummerさんの愛犬で、TEN TOMORROWの看板犬Frankyがお出迎え！
さらにSummerさんから、ご自身が経営する抹茶カフェ「Daily Whisk Matcha」のレモネードをこどもたちにプレゼントしていただきました。
おいしいレモネードを楽しみながら、いよいよファッションデザイナーのお仕事体験スタートです。
👗 ファッションデザイナーの仕事とは？
最初に、TEN TOMORROWのオーナー兼デザイナーであるSummer Shiigiさんから、ファッションデザイナーの仕事についてお話をしていただきました。
Summerさんは、カイムキ発のローカルブランドTEN TOMORROWを手がけるだけでなく、地域イベント「Keep it Kaimuki」をリードするなど、カイムキのコミュニティを盛り上げるビジネスリーダーとしても活動されています。
こどもたちは、ファッションブランドの仕事は「デザイナーが服を描くだけ」ではないことを学びました。
デザインしたアイデアが実際の商品となり、お店に並び、お客さまの手に届くまでには、デザイン、パターン作り、縫製、生産、販売など、さまざまな仕事に関わる人たちの力が必要です。
一つのブランドや一着の洋服は、一人だけで作られるのではなく、多くの人たちの仕事とチームワークによって形になっていくことを、Summerさんのお話を通して知ることができました。
✂️ 本物の布を使って制作体験
最初のお仕事は、実際の布を使った制作です。
まずはたくさんの布の中から、自分の好きなものを選びます。
選んだ布の上に型紙を置き、型紙に沿ってペンで線を引いていきました。
商品を作るためには、ただ布を切るのではなく、必要な形や大きさに合わせて正確に準備することが大切です。
線を引いたら、次はハサミを使って裁断。
自分で描いた線からずれないように、一人ひとり集中しながら布を切っていきました。
簡単そうに見えて、実際にやってみると集中力と慎重さが必要な作業です。
🧵 ミシンで形になっていく！
裁断が終わると、今度はMariさんとKayceeさんによるミシンのデモンストレーションです。
2人がそれぞれミシンを使い、こどもたちが自分で選び、型を取り、切った布を縫っていきます。
先ほどまで一枚の布だったものが、ミシンで縫われることで少しずつ一つのアイテムへと変わっていく様子を、こどもたちは間近で見学しました。
自分たちで一つひとつの工程を体験したからこそ、一つの商品ができあがるまでには、たくさんの作業や技術が必要であることを実感できたのではないでしょうか。
👗 ファッションデザイナーに挑戦！
続いては、こどもたち自身がデザイナーになります。
クロッキー（Croquis）と呼ばれる人型のデッサンを使って、自分だけのファッションをデザインしました。
同じようなクロッキーからスタートしても、選ぶ色や洋服の形、組み合わせは一人ひとりまったく違います。
それぞれの個性やアイデアが詰まった、世界に一つだけのデザインが次々と生まれました。
🌺 オリジナルのアロハ柄をデザイン
次は、ハワイのファッションには欠かせないアロハシャツのプリントデザインです。
植物や色、形など、それぞれが思い描くハワイのイメージを取り入れながら、自分だけのオリジナル柄を考えました。
洋服の「形」だけではなく、布に使われる「柄」や「色」を考えることも、ファッションデザインの大切な仕事の一つです。
🛍️ TEN TOMORROWのショップで学ぶ
最後はデザインスタジオからTEN TOMORROWのショップへ移動しました。
ショップツアーでは、実際に販売されている洋服や商品を見ながら、スタジオで体験した仕事がどのように本物の商品につながっていくのかを学びました。
さらに、布の素材がどこから来るのかについても教えていただき、中には植物を原料として作られている布があることも学びました。
普段なら、
「この洋服かわいい！」
「この色が好き！」
と見ている洋服も、今回の体験をした後では、
「この布は何からできているんだろう？」
「どうやって布になるんだろう？」
「この布がどうやって商品になるんだろう？」
と、少し違った視点から見ることができます。
素敵な洋服やアイテムがたくさん並ぶTEN TOMORROWの店内では、気になるものもいっぱい！最後まで楽しく学ぶことができました。
🌟 こどもたちが学んだこと
今回のワークショップでは、
本物の布に触れる
型紙を使って布に線を引く
ハサミで布を裁断する
ミシンで商品が作られる工程を見る
クロッキーを使って洋服をデザインする
オリジナルのアロハ柄を考える
布の素材について学ぶ
デザインしたものが実際の商品になるまでを知る
など、ファッションに関わるさまざまな仕事を体験しました。
そして、ファッションデザインには、「自由な発想」だけでなく、「ものを作る技術」「素材についての知識」、そして「チームワーク」も必要であることを学びました。
一つのアイデアから始まり、たくさんの工程と人の仕事がつながることで、私たちが普段手に取る商品が生まれます。
今回参加した13人のこどもたちが、これからも自由なアイデアを大切にしながら、自分らしいデザインやものづくりを楽しんでくれたら嬉しいです。
そしていつか、今回のこどもたちがデザインした商品がハワイのお店に並ぶ日が来ることを楽しみにしています。
