Kodama Koi Farm × MIRAI HANA – Kids Job Experience #021: Koi Farmer Edition
MIRAI HANA 第21回こども仕事体験ワークショップ報告「コダマ・コイ・ファーム編」（日本語は英語の下にあります）
On Sunday, August 2, 2026, eleven children participated in the MIRAI HANA Kids Job Experience – Junior Koi Farmer Workshop at Kodama Koi Farm, one of the largest koi farms in the United States.
Due to popular demand following our previous workshop, this special experience was brought back for a second time. Held just one day before the first day of school for many children in Hawaiʻi, it was a memorable way to wrap up summer vacation through hands-on learning.
The workshop was led by Mr. Taro Kodama, President of Kodama Koi Farm, and Ms. Maria Ichijo, Manager, who warmly welcomed the children and shared their passion and expertise throughout the day.
📖 Learning About Koi
The day began with an introduction to koi fish and the work of a koi farmer.
Children learned about different koi varieties, colors, patterns, and the important role koi play in Japanese culture. During an interactive quiz, they discovered many fascinating facts, including:
Koi are symbols of good fortune and longevity.
The world's longest-living koi lived for over 200 years.
The most expensive koi ever sold was valued at over one million dollars.
The children listened carefully, eagerly answered questions, and enjoyed learning about these remarkable fish.
🚶 Behind-the-Scenes Koi Farm Tour
Next, the children explored areas of Kodama Koi Farm that are normally closed to visitors.
Mr. Taro guided the group through the farm, introducing everything from one-year-old baby koi to magnificent four-year-old giant koi.
Along the way, children asked thoughtful questions, including:
What is koi food made from?
Where did koi originally come from?
How big and heavy can koi become?
Why are the ponds covered with nets?
Mr. Taro also explained the three important factors that help koi grow large:
Genetics
Space to swim
Proper nutrition
The tour gave children a rare opportunity to experience what it is like to work at a real koi farm.
🐟 Feeding & Touching the Koi
One of the biggest highlights of the day was feeding the koi.
The energetic baby koi eagerly rushed to the surface, splashing water as they competed for food, making everyone laugh and smile.
The children also had the rare opportunity to gently touch one of the giant koi and experience how surprisingly smooth and slippery its skin feels.
🎨 Creative Koi Craft
After returning indoors, each child designed and colored their own koi streamer (koinobori).
Using their favorite colors and unique patterns, every child created a one-of-a-kind masterpiece while expressing their creativity and imagination.
🌟 What the Children Learned
Through this workshop, children learned about:
The daily work of a koi farmer
Koi care and farming
Japanese culture and symbolism
Curiosity through asking questions
Creativity and self-expression
More importantly, they experienced the joy of learning directly from professionals in a real working environment.

2026年8月2日（日）、アメリカ最大級の養鯉場である「コダマ・コイ・ファーム」にて、「ジュニア・鯉ファーマー仕事体験ワークショップ」を開催し、5〜10歳の子どもたち11名が参加しました。
前回大変好評だったことから、参加者の皆さまからのリクエストを受けて実現した今回のワークショップ。ハワイの多くの学校で新学期が始まる前日ということもあり、夏休み最後の思い出にふさわしい、特別な一日となりました。
当日は、コダマ・コイ・ファーム代表の太郎さん と、マネージャーのマリアさんが子どもたちを温かく迎えてくださり、鯉への深い知識と情熱を持ってご指導くださいました。
📖 鯉について学ぼう
ワークショップは、鯉の種類や特徴、そしてコイファーマーという仕事について学ぶことからスタートしました。
鯉クイズでは、
鯉は幸運や長寿の象徴であること
世界最高齢の鯉は200年以上生きたこと
世界で最も高額な錦鯉は100万ドル以上で取引されたこと
など、子どもたちは驚きながら楽しく学びました。
🚶 普段は入れない鯉ファームを特別見学
その後は、普段は一般公開されていないファーム内を特別に見学しました。
太郎さんの案内で、1歳の小さな鯉から4歳の大きな錦鯉まで、さまざまな鯉を間近で観察しました。
子どもたちからは、
鯉のエサは何でできているの？
鯉はどこから来たの？
どのくらい大きくなるの？
池にはなぜネットがかかっているの？
など、たくさんの質問が飛び交いました。
また、鯉が大きく育つためには、
遺伝
広い環境でたくさん泳ぐこと
よく食べること
の3つが大切であることも教えていただきました。
🐟 餌やり・鯉に触れる特別体験
ワークショップのハイライトは、鯉への餌やり体験です。
元気いっぱいの稚鯉たちが勢いよく集まり、水しぶきを上げながら餌を食べる様子に、子どもたちは大興奮でした。
さらに、大きな錦鯉に実際に触れるという貴重な体験も。
「ぬるぬるしてる！」「思ったよりやわらかい！」など、子どもたちは五感を使って鯉の魅力を感じていました。
🎨 オリジナルこいのぼり作り
見学の後は、オリジナルのミニこいのぼり作りに挑戦しました。
好きな色や模様を自由に描き、一人ひとり個性あふれる作品が完成しました。

子どもたちは本物の養鯉場だからこそできる体験を通して、学ぶことの楽しさや、新しいことに挑戦する喜びを感じる一日となりました。
