Waikīkī Aquarium × MIRAI HANA – Kids Job Experience #019: Aquarist Edition

MIRAI HANA 第19回こども仕事体験ワークショップ報告「水族館飼育員編」

On Sunday, May 3, twelve children participated in a special aquarist job-experience workshop at Waikīkī Aquarium, a leading ocean education and research facility affiliated with the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa.

We were warmly welcomed by Education Program Manager Alyce, Alena (a student employee assisting with the program), and the entire team, and had a valuable opportunity to learn about the work of caring for marine life. From daily feeding preparation to water quality management and observation, the children discovered that being an aquarist requires responsibility, consistency, and teamwork.

🐠 Learning Through Real-World Experience

Throughout the workshop, the children explored what it truly means to work as an aquarist through hands-on and real-world experiences.

💧 Water Quality & Scientific Thinking

The children participated in a water quality testing activity, learning how aquarists monitor marine environments.

By observing color changes in test samples, they identified pH levels and discussed whether the water was more acidic or basic. Through this process, they learned that natural environments do not require “perfect” conditions, but rather a balanced range that supports life.

By sharing their observations, the children began to think and respond like young scientists.

👀 Behind-the-Scenes & Hands-on Learning

In a special behind-the-scenes area, the children interacted directly with marine life.

They observed how sea urchins use tiny tube feet to grasp and move objects, and experienced feeding sea anemones using tweezers, watching how the animals capture food with their tentacles.

These hands-on activities helped them understand animal behavior, care, and the importance of precision and responsibility in daily work.

🐠 Gallery Exploration – Applying Their Learning

After completing their hands-on sessions, the children entered the Aquarium galleries with their self-made pocket guides.

Working in teams, they identified fish and marine life such as butterflyfish, triggerfish, jellyfish, sea urchins, and coral, connecting their earlier learning to real-world observation.

This activity strengthened their observation skills and built confidence as they successfully matched what they learned with what they saw.

🦭 Special Session: Hawaiian Monk Seal

A highlight of the workshop was a live session featuring Hō‘ailona, a resident Hawaiian Monk Seal.

Children learned that Hawaiian Monk Seals are an endangered species found only in Hawaiʻi, and that Hō‘ailona, due to his limited vision, now lives under human care.

They observed how he uses his highly sensitive whiskers—like fingertips—to sense his surroundings, and how training using positive reinforcement supports his daily care.

Through this training, Hō‘ailona can voluntarily participate in health checks such as dental exams, eye care, and body inspections. The children gained insight into how trust-based relationships support both animal welfare and medical care.

They also learned about enrichment activities, including toys, sensory stimulation, and environmental variation, which help keep animals mentally and physically engaged.

🌊 Conservation & Respect for Wildlife

The session also emphasized conservation and responsibility.

The children learned that Hawaiian Monk Seals are endemic to Hawaiʻi and critically important to protect. They practiced how to observe wildlife respectfully, including maintaining safe distances using a simple “thumb rule.”

Through this, they understood that protecting marine life is not only the role of scientists, but something everyone can contribute to.

🌟 What the Children Learned

Through this workshop, the children learned that being an aquarist is more than just working with animals.

It is about responsibility, teamwork, scientific thinking, observation, and care.

They experienced how daily efforts support animal wellbeing, and how humans play an important role in protecting the ocean and its ecosystems.

The workshop sparked curiosity, encouraged thoughtful observation, and left the children with meaningful, memorable experiences.

2026年5月3日（日）、ハワイ大学マノア校に所属する海洋教育・研究施設であるワイキキ水族館にて、第19回こども仕事体験ワークショップを開催し、12名の子どもたちが参加しました。

Education Program ManagerのAlyceさん、Alenaさんをはじめ、チームの皆さまに温かく迎えていただき、海の生き物を支える仕事について学ぶ特別な機会となりました。餌の準備や水質管理、観察などを通して、水族館飼育員の仕事には責任感・継続力・チームワークが欠かせないことを体感しました。

🐠 リアルな現場での学び

今回のワークショップでは、実際の現場での体験を通して「水族館で働くとはどういうことか」を深く学びました。

💧 水質管理とサイエンスの視点

水質チェックのアクティビティでは、水の色の変化を観察しながらpH値を読み取り、酸性・アルカリ性の違いについて学びました。

自然環境では「完璧な水」ではなく、生き物にとって適切なバランスが大切であることを知り、子どもたちは自分の観察結果を共有しながら、まるで小さな科学者のように考える姿が見られました。

👀 バックヤード体験と実際に触れてみる学習

普段は入ることのできないバックヤードエリアでは、海の生き物と直接触れ合う体験を行いました。

ウニが管足を使って物をつかむ様子を観察したり、ピンセットを使ってイソギンチャクに餌を与え、触手で餌を運ぶ様子を間近で見るなど、生き物の行動や仕組みを体感的に学びました。

こうした体験を通して、日々のケアにおける丁寧さや責任の大切さを理解しました。

🐠 ギャラリーでの観察と探究

その後、子どもたちは自分たちで作成したポケットガイドを持って館内の展示へ。

チームに分かれて魚や生き物を探し、バタフライフィッシュやトリガーフィッシュ、クラゲ、ウニ、サンゴなどを実際に見つけながら、学んだ内容を実際の環境と結びつけていきました。

自分たちで見つけて確認することで、観察力と自信が大きく育まれました。

🦭 特別セッション：ハワイアンモンクシール

今回の大きなハイライトのひとつが、ハワイアンモンクシール「ホーアイロナ」の特別セッションです。

ハワイにしか生息しない絶滅危惧種であること、そして視力がほとんどないため人のケアのもとで生活していることを学びました。

ヒゲを使って周囲を感じる仕組みや、ポジティブ・リインフォースメント（正の強化）によるトレーニングの様子も見学。

トレーニングを通して、歯のチェックや目のケア、体の検査などに自発的に参加できることを知り、動物福祉と医療ケアのつながりを理解しました。

また、おもちゃや水、感覚刺激などを使ったエンリッチメントにより、心身の健康を保っていることも学びました。

🌊 海を守るということ

セッションでは、自然の中でのモンクシールの生活や保護の重要性についても学びました。

野生で見かけた際の距離の取り方や「親指ルール」など、実際に役立つ知識も紹介され、子どもたちは「自分たちにもできることがある」という意識を持つことができました。

🌟 子どもたちの学び

今回のワークショップを通して、子どもたちは水族館の仕事は単に生き物と関わるだけでなく、

責任・チームワーク・観察力・科学的思考・思いやりが必要であることを学びました。

日々の小さな積み重ねが生き物の命を支えていること、そして人と自然のつながりの大切さを体感する機会となりました。

子どもたちは新しい視点とともに、心に残る体験を持ち帰りました。
