On Sunday, April 19, eleven children participated in a Dentist Job Experience Workshop at Hawaii Kai Dental Studio.
This special experience was made possible thanks to the generous support of Dr. Belle, Dr. Hans, Kuni, Julie, and the entire team, allowing the children to learn in a real clinical environment.
Hawaii Kai Dental Studio provides both general and pediatric dental care, offering a well-rounded and realistic learning experience that closely reflects actual dental practice.
🦷 Clinic Tour & Dental Tools
The workshop began with a guided tour of the clinic.
Children explored different areas of the office and learned how each space is used to care for patients.
They were also introduced to real dental instruments and learned about their functions and purposes.
Dr. Hans explained not only how the tools are used, but also emphasized the importance of cleanliness, safety, and precision in dentistry.
🔍 Understanding Cavities & Treatment
Dr. Hans explained how treatment methods vary depending on the size of a cavity in a way that was easy for children to understand.
Small cavities can be treated with fillings, but when a cavity becomes too large, the tooth may need to be removed, leaving an empty space.
The children learned that leaving this space untreated can affect not only appearance but also the ability to eat and chew properly.
They were also introduced to how dentists replace missing teeth using solutions such as partial dentures.
🧪 What is an Impression?
To replace missing teeth, it is essential to understand the exact shape of the mouth.
Dr. Belle explained the impression process by comparing it to making pancakes or cake, helping the children easily grasp the concept.
They learned how materials are mixed and used to create molds of the teeth, which are then used to produce models for treatment planning.
🖥️ Introduction to Digital Technology
The children were also introduced to modern dental technology through a demonstration of a digital scanner.
This tool captures images of the teeth, allowing dentists to create digital models without using traditional impression materials.
It provided insight into how dentistry continues to evolve with new technology.
🔧 Hands-on Workshop (Rotation Style)
The children were divided into two groups and participated in hands-on activities in a rotation format.
🦷 Team A: Impression Experience
Using alginate material and trays, children experienced how dental impressions are taken.
They observed how the material changes from soft to firm and learned how impressions are used in real treatments.
Each child took home their own impression as a souvenir.
✨ Team B: Filling Experience
At this station, children learned the process of repairing teeth with fillings.
They followed real dental steps, including etching, bonding, placing composite material, and curing it with light.
Watching the material transform from soft to hard was a particularly memorable moment.
Each child also took home their completed tooth model.
📖 Reflection
At the end of the workshop, children reflected on their experience by completing their work notebooks.
By writing about what they learned, what surprised them, and what they enjoyed, they were able to deepen their understanding of the experience.
🌟 What the Children Learned
Through this workshop, children learned that being a dentist is not only about treating teeth, but also about precision, responsibility, and caring for others.
They experienced how science, technology, and human connection come together in a real clinical setting.
This meaningful and unique experience was only possible because of a clinic that provides both general and pediatric dentistry.

2026年4月19日（日）、Hawaii Kai Dental Studioにて、11名の子どもたちが歯医者さんのお仕事体験に参加しました。
Dr. Belle、Dr. Hans、Kuniさん、Julieさんをはじめとするスタッフの皆さまのご協力のもと、実際のクリニックを舞台にした特別な体験が実現しました。
Hawaii Kai Dental Studioは、一般歯科と小児歯科の両方を提供しているクリニックであり、実際の現場に近い、よりリアルで幅広い学びの機会となりました。
🦷 院内見学＆器具の紹介
ワークショップは、クリニック内の見学からスタート。
子どもたちは各スペースの役割を学びながら、患者さんがどのようにケアされているのかを知りました。
また、実際に使われている歯科器具にも触れ、それぞれの用途や役割について学びました。
Dr. Hansからは、器具の使い方だけでなく、清潔さ・安全性・正確さがいかに重要であるかについても説明がありました。
🔍 虫歯と歯の治療について
Dr. Hansは、虫歯の大きさによって治療方法が変わることを、子どもたちにもわかりやすく説明してくださいました。
小さな虫歯は詰め物で治療することができますが、大きく進行してしまった場合は歯を抜く必要があり、その部分には空間が生まれます。
そのままにしてしまうと、見た目だけでなく、食べたり噛んだりすることにも影響が出てしまいます。
そこで、部分入れ歯などを使って歯を補うという治療についても学びました。
🧪 型取り（インプレッション）とは？
歯を補うためには、口の中の形を正確に把握する必要があります。
Dr. Belleは、型取りの工程をパンケーキやケーキ作りに例えながら、やわらかい材料を混ぜて歯の型を取る仕組みをわかりやすく説明してくださいました。
その型から模型を作り、歯の形を再現することで、治療に役立てていきます。
🖥️ デジタル技術の紹介
さらに、最新の歯科医療として、デジタルスキャナーの紹介も行われました。
カメラのような機器で歯の状態を撮影し、従来の型取りを行わずにデジタルで再現する方法です。
より快適で、歯科医療の進化を実感できる機会となりました。
🔧 体験ワークショップ（ローテーション形式）
子どもたちは2つのグループに分かれ、ローテーション形式で体験を行いました。
🦷 Aチーム：型取り体験
アルジネート材料とトレーを使い、実際の型取り工程を体験。
やわらかい材料が固まっていく様子を観察しながら、歯の型がどのように作られるのかを学びました。
完成した型は、お土産として持ち帰りました。
✨ Bチーム：詰め物体験
詰め物の工程を実際に体験し、エッチング、ボンディング、充填、光で固めるまでの一連の流れを学びました。材料がやわらかい状態から固まる瞬間は、特に印象的な体験となりました。
こちらも完成した歯の模型を持ち帰りました。
📖 振り返り
最後に、ワークノートを使って体験の振り返りを行いました。
学んだことや感じたことを書き出すことで、体験をより深く理解する時間となりました。
🌟 子どもたちが学んだこと
今回のワークショップを通して、歯医者さんの仕事は単に歯を治すだけでなく、
正確さ
責任感
そして人を思いやる気持ち
が求められる仕事であることを学びました。
科学・技術・人との関わりが一体となった、実際の医療現場ならではの学びとなりました。
一般歯科と小児歯科の両方を兼ね備えたクリニックだからこそ実現できた、特別で貴重な体験となりました。
