On Thursday, March 26, fifteen children participated in a snack factory job-experience workshop at Diamond Bakery Hawaii, a beloved local company in Honolulu with over 100 years of history.
President Butch Galdeira and Director Jackie Murai-Pederson kindly welcomed the children and introduced them to the world of snack production.
Diamond Bakery, founded in 1921 by three Japanese immigrants, began as a small dream and has grown into Hawaii’s largest cracker and cookie manufacturer. Known for its time-tested recipes and locally loved products, the company continues to share aloha through snacks enjoyed across generations.
The children were excited to learn not only how snacks are made, but also how a company operates, grows, and contributes to the community.

To begin, the children participated in a fun and interactive quiz about Diamond Bakery.

This helped the children understand that a business is built not only on products, but also on values and people.
🍪 Workshop Experience
During the workshop,
the children experienced three key parts of the real snack factory process,
guided by the Diamond Bakery team.
🥣 Experience 1: Ingredient Mixing Process
The children first observed how large quantities of ingredients are added and mixed in the factory.
They watched as the ingredients were combined using industrial equipment,
learning how cookie dough is made on a much larger scale than at home.
Seeing this real production process up close gave them a deeper understanding of
what happens behind the scenes in a factory.
🔪 Experience 2: Cookie Cutting
Next, the children worked with real cookie dough
and used their favorite cutters to create their own original cookies.
They learned the importance of working carefully and precisely,
and enjoyed expressing their creativity through different shapes.
🔥 Experience 3: Baking in a Large Industrial Oven
Finally, the children watched their cookies being baked
in a large industrial oven.
They were amazed by the size and speed of the equipment,
and excited to see their own creations transform from dough into real cookies.
This moment allowed them to truly experience the process of making something from start to finish.
🎁 Full Snack Factory Experience
After completing the stations, the children enjoyed the full experience of a snack factory.
They tasted their freshly baked cookies
and packaged them in bags they designed themselves.
This allowed them to experience the full process —
from making to delivering a finished product.
🤝 Community & Giving Back
The children also learned that Diamond Bakery is deeply involved in supporting the community.
Through various initiatives such as fundraising and partnerships,
the company continues to give back and support local families and organizations.
A portion of this workshop was donated to support COTA for Aurelia,
making this experience even more meaningful.
💰 Real-Life Learning Experience
At the end of the workshop, the children used the $10 coupons they earned through the quiz
to shop at the store.
They selected their favorite snacks while practicing simple money calculations,
turning the experience into a fun and practical lesson in real-life economics.
🌟 What the Children Learned
Through this workshop, the children learned that working in a snack factory is a combination of skill, teamwork, and care.
They also discovered that businesses can play an important role not only in creating products,
but also in supporting the community and making a positive impact.

Each child left with their own handmade cookies,
original stickers, snacks, and a sandwich lunch.
It was a warm and joyful ending to a day filled with learning, creativity, and meaningful experiences.

ホノルルで100年以上の歴史を持つ Diamond Bakery Hawaii にて、
15名のこどもたちがスナック工場のおしごと体験に参加しました。
Butch Galdeira 社長、Jackie Murai-Pederson 様をはじめ、
スタッフの皆さまに温かく迎えていただき、
お菓子づくりだけでなく、会社の歴史や想い、地域とのつながりについても学びました。
Diamond Bakery は1921年に3人の日本人移民によって創業され、
小さな夢から始まり、現在ではハワイを代表するクラッカー・クッキーメーカーへと成長しました。
長年愛され続けている商品や、その背景にあるこだわりを知ることで、
こどもたちは「ものづくり」の奥深さに触れることができました。

ワークショップの導入では、
Diamond Bakeryについてクイズ形式で学びました。

楽しみながら考え、発言し、理解を深める時間となりました。

企業は「商品」だけでなく、「想い」や「人」で成り立っていることを学びました。
🍪 体験内容
今回のワークショップでは、
Diamond Bakeryのスタッフの皆さまのもと、
実際の工場の流れに沿って、3つの体験を行いました。
🥣 体験1：材料投入・ミキシング工程の見学
まずは、大量のクッキーの材料を実際に機械に入れていく様子を見学しました。
普段は見ることのできない工場のスケールで、
どのように材料が混ざり合い、生地が作られていくのかを間近で学びました。
こどもたちは、その迫力と工程の正確さに驚きながら、
「お菓子づくりの裏側」に触れることができました。
🔪 体験2：クッキーの型抜き体験
次に、実際のクッキー生地に触れながら、
自分の好きな型を使ってオリジナルのクッキーを作りました。
同じ生地でも形によって印象が変わることや、
丁寧に作業することの大切さを体験しました。
🔥 体験3：大型オーブンでの焼成見学
最後に、自分たちで作ったクッキーが、
大型の業務用オーブンで焼かれていく様子を見学しました。
工場ならではの大きな設備とスピード感に、
こどもたちは目を輝かせていました。
生地がクッキーへと変わっていく過程を見守ることで、
ものづくりの面白さと達成感を感じることができました。
🎁 スナック工場の一連の体験
焼きあがったクッキーをその場で味わい、
自分でデザインした袋に入れて持ち帰ることで、
「つくる → 届ける」までの流れを一貫して体験しました。
見学だけでなく、実際に工場内でクッキーづくりまで体験できる、
とても貴重で特別な機会となりました。
🤝 地域への取り組み
Diamond Bakery Hawaii は、お菓子づくりだけでなく、
さまざまな形で地域社会に貢献している企業です。
ファンドレイジングやパートナーシップなどを通して、多くの団体やご家族を支えています。
また、今回のワークショップの一部がCOTA for Aurelia への支援として寄付され、
この体験がより特別で意味のあるものとなりました。
💰 お金の学び
最後には、クイズで獲得した $10クーポン を使い、売店で実際にお買い物を体験しました。
自分で好きなお菓子を選びながら、
お金の計算をする実践的な学びの時間となりました。

今回の体験を通して、こどもたちはお菓子づくりには楽しさだけでなく、
丁寧さ・責任感・チームワークが必要であることを学びました。
また、企業が社会にどのように関わり、
人や地域を支えているのかについても理解を深めました。
