Aliʻi Animal Hospital × MIRAI HANA – Kids Job Experience #012: Veterinarian Edition

MIRAI HANA proudly hosted the 12th Kids Job Experience Workshop in collaboration with Aliʻi Animal Hospital & Resort on Sunday, January 25, 2026.

A total of 24 children (ages 5–14) participated across two sessions (morning and afternoon), stepping into a real veterinary clinic to experience what it means to work as an animal healthcare professional.

The children were warmly welcomed by
Executive Director & Owner Mr. Matt Malta,
Ms. Shawna (Assistant Hospital Manager),
Ms. Autumn (Front Desk Manager),
Ms. Celeste (Operations),
and student helpers Ayva and Felicity,
who supported the workshop throughout the day with care, patience, and professionalism.

🐾 Opening & Safety Orientation

Each session began with a warm welcome and icebreaker led by the Aliʻi Animal Hospital team and MIRAI HANA staff.

Before any hands-on activities, the children received a clear and age-appropriate safety explanation, learning:

• How to behave calmly and safely around animals

• Why following instructions is essential in a medical setting

• How veterinarians prioritize safety for both animals and people

The children were then officially introduced to their role for the day as Junior Veterinarians, learning that veterinary medicine supports not only animals, but also families and the community.

🏥 Clinic Tour: Inside a Real Animal Hospital

The children participated in a guided clinic tour, where staff explained how each area of the hospital plays an important role in animal care.

They visited:

• Treatment area

• X-ray room

• Laboratory

• Operating room

• Dental suite

• Hospital kennels

Through this tour, children learned that veterinary care is a team-based process, involving many specialists and spaces beyond what clients typically see.

🐶 Group Activity 1: Physical Examination & Basic Care

The children experienced the basics of veterinary health checkups through hands-on activities.

• Meeting the dogs and learning how to interact with animals appropriately

• Learning about daily pet care and healthy habits

• Gently feeling the abdomen to understand how veterinarians assess an animal’s condition

• Listening to heartbeats with a stethoscope and learning about heart murmurs

• Examining the ears, eyes, and mouth

• Learning that dental health is essential to overall health, and using tooth and gum models to compare healthy conditions with common dental problems

Through this experience, the children learned that veterinarians carefully observe animals from nose to tail, and assess health by noticing even small changes—including those in the teeth and gums.

🔬 Group Activity 2: Lab Work & Cytology

In this activity, children learned about diagnostic procedures through a visual and hands-on demonstration.

Using a jelly model representing a bladder, the children practiced how veterinarians collect samples by carefully using a syringe to remove “unhealthy” material—safely simulating the cystocentesis procedure in an age-appropriate way.

This experience helped the children understand:

• How diagnostic samples are collected

• Why precision and gentleness are essential

• How lab work supports accurate treatment decisions

🩹 Surgical Skills Experience

Children were also introduced to basic surgical skills, including:

• A demonstration of cystocentesis

• Learning about incisions and practicing suturing techniques

Staff emphasized cleanliness, focus, and teamwork, helping children appreciate the responsibility involved in surgical care.

📸 Reflection & Closing

At the end of each session, a group photo was taken with all participants and staff.

During the closing ceremony, children were invited to reflect on:

• What they learned as Junior Veterinarians

• Their favorite moments

• New discoveries about animals and medical care

They recorded their reflections in their Work Notebooks, reinforcing what they had learned throughout the day.

🌟 What the Children Learned

Through this immersive experience, the children learned that veterinary medicine is a combination of:

• Compassion and empathy for animals

• Scientific observation and diagnostic skills

• Teamwork and communication

• Responsibility and safety awareness

Many children shared that this experience helped them better understand animal care—and inspired some to imagine becoming veterinarians in the future.

こども仕事体験ワークショップ #012　獣医師編

2026年1月25日（日）、MIRAI HANAは Aliʻi Animal Hospital & Resort とコラボレーションし、第12回こども仕事体験ワークショップ「獣医師編」を開催しました。

当日は午前・午後の2セッションを実施し、5〜14歳のこども24名が参加。
実際の動物病院のクリニック内で、動物医療の現場を体験しながら、獣医師という仕事について学びました。

こどもたちは

そして学生ヘルパーの Ayvaさん、Felicityさん に温かく迎えられ、
一日を通して丁寧なサポートのもとでプログラムに参加しました。

🐾 オープニング・安全説明

各セッションは、Aliʻi Animal HospitalスタッフとMIRAI HANAスタッフによる歓迎とアイスブレイクからスタートしました。

実習に入る前に、こどもたちは年齢に配慮した安全説明を受け、次のことを学びました。

• 動物のそばで落ち着いて行動すること

• 医療現場では指示を守ることがとても大切であること

• 獣医師が動物と人の両方の安全を守っていること

その後、こどもたちはこの日の役割として
「ジュニア獣医師」 に任命され、
獣医師の仕事が動物だけでなく、家族や地域を支える大切な仕事であることを学びました。

🏥 クリニックツアー 本物の動物病院を見て学ぶ

スタッフの案内のもと、こどもたちは動物病院内を見学しました。

見学したエリア：

• トリートメントエリア

• レントゲン室

• ラボ（検査室）

• 手術室

• 歯科治療室

• 入院用ケンネル

それぞれの場所がどのような役割を持ち、チームとして連携しながら動物を支えているのかを学び、
獣医療がチームワークで成り立つ仕事であることを理解しました。

🐶 グループアクティビティ① 身体検査と基本的なケア

こどもたちは、獣医師が行う基本的な健康チェックを体験しました。

• 犬たちと実際に対面し、動物との接し方を学ぶ

• 日常のペットケアや健康的な生活習慣について学習

• おなかに触れながら、体の状態を確認する方法を知る

• 聴診器を使って心音を聞き、心雑音について学ぶ

• 耳・目・口のチェックを体験

• 歯の健康が全身の健康にとって重要であることを学び、歯と歯茎の模型を使って、正常な状態とトラブルの違いを確認

この体験を通して、こどもたちは獣医師が動物を
頭からしっぽまで丁寧に観察し、
歯や歯茎を含む小さな変化から健康状態を見極めていることを学びました。

🔬 グループアクティビティ②検査・細胞診体験

検査の仕組みを学ぶため、視覚的で分かりやすい体験を行いました。

膀胱に見立てたゼリー模型を使い、 注射器で「悪いもの」を取り除く体験を通して、
膀胱穿刺（Cystocentesis） の考え方を安全に学びました。

この体験から、こどもたちは次のことを理解しました。

• 獣医師がどのように検体を採取するのか

• 正確さと優しさが医療で重要な理由

• 検査結果が治療方針の判断につながること

🩹 外科スキル体験

さらに、外科的な処置についても学びました。

• 膀胱穿刺（Cystocentesis）の説明

• 切開や縫合（Suture）の基礎体験

清潔さ、集中力、チームワークの重要性が強調され、
外科医療に伴う責任の重さを実感する機会となりました。

📸 ふりかえり・クロージング

各セッションの最後には、参加者全員とスタッフで集合写真を撮影しました。

クロージングでは、

• ジュニア獣医師として学んだこと

• 一番楽しかったこと

• 新しく気づいたこと

について振り返り、こどもたちはお仕事手帳に感想を書きました。
体験を言葉にすることで、学びがより深まりました。

🌟 こどもたちが得た学び

この体験を通して、こどもたちは獣医師の仕事が

• 動物への思いやり

• 科学的な観察と検査

• チームで協力する力

• 安全と責任への意識

から成り立っていることを学びました。

多くのこどもたちが
「もっと動物のことを知りたい」
「将来、獣医師になりたい」
と話してくれました。
