Kodama Koi Farm × MIRAI HANA – Kids Job Experience #011: Koi Farmer Edition
MIRAI HANA 第11回こども仕事体験ワークショップ報告「コダマ・コイ・ファーム編」（日本語は英語の下にあります）
On Sunday, December 21, fifteen children participated in a “Junior Koi Farmer” job-experience workshop at Kodama Koi Farm, one of the largest koi farms in the United States.
The workshop was led by Mr. Taro Kodama, President of Kodama Koi Farm, and Ms. Maria Francisco, Manager, who warmly welcomed the children and guided them throughout the day while sharing their deep knowledge and passion for koi fish.
📖 Learning About Koi Fish (Indoor Session)
The workshop began indoors with an introduction to different types of koi fish.
Using photos from Kodama Koi Farm’s 2026 calendar, which each child received as a gift, Ms. Maria explained the wide variety of koi colors, patterns, sizes, and names.
The children then participated in a fun and interactive koi quiz, where they learned interesting facts about koi fish, including what koi symbolize in Japanese culture and the types of personalities often associated with them.
The children listened closely and eagerly shared their answers. Those with the highest scores received a children’s book about koi fish, adding excitement and motivation to the learning experience.
🚶 Exploring the Koi Farm (Outdoor Tour)
Next, the group moved outdoors to explore the koi farm, led by Mr. Taro.
The children were amazed by the many tanks filled with koi of different sizes, colors, and varieties.
As they walked through the farm, Mr. Taro shared fascinating insights about koi farming, including how koi prices, sizes, and coloration can vary greatly. The children were especially impressed by how large some koi can grow and how carefully they are raised over time.
🐟 Feeding the Koi
One of the highlights of the day was feeding the koi.
The children were surprised to see how energetic and hungry the baby koi were compared to the larger, calmer fish.
Watching the koi eagerly swim up to the surface made the experience exciting, lively, and unforgettable for everyone.
🎨 Creative Activity: Making Koinobori
After returning indoors, the children shifted from learning to creating.
Each child designed their own mini koinobori (carp streamer) using a wide range of colors and patterns. Every piece reflected the child’s personality and creativity.
In addition, the children worked together to create a large group koinobori, turning the activity into a collaborative team effort that encouraged communication and cooperation.
📸 Special Experience & Closing
To wrap up the day, everyone returned outside to take group photos with their large koinobori.
The children were also given a special opportunity to gently touch a very large koi, allowing them to connect closely with these impressive fish in a safe and memorable way.

Everyone had a fun and meaningful time and left Kodama Koi Farm feeling excited, accomplished, and inspired by what they learned.

12月21日（日）、15名の子どもたちが、アメリカ最大級の養鯉場である「コダマ・コイ・ファーム」において、「ジュニア鯉ファーマー」仕事体験ワークショップに参加しました。
当日は、コダマ・コイ・ファーム代表の 太郎 さん と、マネージャーの マリア さん が子どもたちを温かく迎えてくださり、鯉への深い知識と愛情をもって、一日を通してご案内くださいました。
📖 鯉について学ぼう（屋内セッション）
ワークショップは屋内でのレクチャーからスタートしました。
マリアさんが、コダマ・コイ・ファームの 2026年カレンダー（参加者全員へのプレゼント）を使いながら、鯉の色・模様・大きさ・名前の違いについて丁寧に説明してくださいました。
その後は、子どもたちが楽しみにしていた 鯉クイズ。
鯉に関する豆知識だけでなく、
日本文化における鯉の意味
鯉に例えられる性格の特徴
なども学び、子どもたちは積極的に手を挙げて答えていました。
成績優秀者には 鯉の絵本がプレゼントされ、学びの時間がさらに盛り上がりました。
🚶 コイ・ファーム探検（屋外ツアー）
次に、太郎さんの案内で屋外のコイ・ファームを見学しました。
大きさや色、種類の異なるたくさんの鯉が泳ぐ水槽に、子どもたちは目を輝かせていました。
太郎さんからは、
鯉のサイズや模様によって価格が大きく変わること
長い時間をかけて大切に育てられていること
など、実際の現場ならではのお話を聞くことができました。
特に、大きく成長した鯉の迫力には、子どもたちも驚いていました。
🐟 鯉にえさやり体験
この日のハイライトのひとつが えさやり体験です。
元気いっぱいの稚鯉と、落ち着いた大きな鯉の違いを間近で観察しながら、えさをあげました。
水面に集まってくる鯉たちの様子に、子どもたちからは歓声が上がり、忘れられない体験となりました。
🎨 創作体験：こいのぼり作り
屋内に戻ったあとは、創作の時間です。
子どもたちはそれぞれ、自分だけの ミニこいのぼりを自由な発想でデザインしました。色や模様は一人ひとり異なり、どれも個性あふれる作品に仕上がりました。
さらに、全員で協力して 大きなこいのぼりも制作。
声をかけ合いながら進めることで、チームワークと協力の大切さを自然に学ぶ時間となりました。
📸 特別体験と締めくくり
最後は屋外に出て、完成した大きなこいのぼりと一緒に 記念撮影。
さらに、特別に とても大きな鯉にそっと触れる体験もさせていただき、子どもたちは鯉の力強さと美しさを肌で感じることができました。
