PAIKO × MIRAI HANA – Kids Job Experience #008: Florist Edition

On Sunday, November 16, twelve children participated in a florist job-experience workshop at PAIKO, a botanical and flower shop located in Kakaʻako.
Courtney, the owner of PAIKO, and florist Clare kindly shared their experiences and taught the children about the work of a florist. Courtney opened PAIKO 13 years ago. The shop was previously located inside the popular SALT At Our Kakaʻako complex, but moved to its current location on Halekauwila Street two years ago.
Most of the flowers sold at PAIKO—or used in their arrangements—come from Hawai‘i Island or Maui, while others are sourced from overseas, such as New Zealand. The children learned that a florist’s job includes removing insects and cleaning flowers that arrive fresh from other islands or countries, sometimes still covered in soil. They were also surprised to hear that working with fresh flowers often means racing against time—starting early in the morning for weddings or event installations, and sometimes working late into the night.
It was the first time many of them learned about these behind-the-scenes responsibilities, and everyone listened with curiosity.
Before starting the hands-on activities, the children learned about tropical flowers through a quiz and explored the various blooms displayed in the shop. Some flowers, like anthuriums and plumeria, felt familiar to them, while others—such as king protea and heliconia—were new and exciting. Seeing, touching, and smelling these flowers up close was a refreshing and memorable experience.
For the first activity, the children created botanical collages using a variety of cut flowers and leaves prepared by PAIKO. Each child expressed their creativity differently: some placed their favorite flower in the center as a focal point, others used leaves to create heart shapes, some arranged petals one by one, and others designed figures using flowers and foliage. Every collage was unique, personal, and beautiful.
The second activity was bouquet-making. With guidance from Courtney, the children carefully selected their favorite tropical flowers and greenery. They listened attentively as she explained tips such as which lengths or shapes to arrange first to create balance. Many children chose flowers while thinking of someone special—“I’m making this for my mom,” “This is for my sister who always plays with me.”
After choosing their wrapping paper and ribbon colors, each child completed their own one-of-a-kind bouquet. They proudly held their creations, their faces glowing with joy and accomplishment.
Through this workshop, the children experienced the beauty of Hawai‘i’s flowers, learned about the craft and dedication behind a florist’s work, and created heartfelt gifts for loved ones.
As Courtney told them, “Flowers make people happy.”
We believe the children truly felt the meaning of those words.

11月16日（日）、12人の子どもたちがカカアコにあるボタニカル＆フラワーショップ「PAIKO（パイコ）」で、お花屋さんのお仕事体験をしました。
PAIKOのオーナー・Courtney（コートニー）さん、そしてフローリストのClare（クレア）さんに、お花屋さんのお仕事についてお話をしていただきました。CourtneyさんがPAIKOをオープンしてから13年。以前はカカアコの人気商業施設「SALT At Our Kaka’ako」内にお店を構えていましたが、2年前に現在のHalekauwila Streetへ移転されたそうです。
PAIKOで販売しているお花やアレンジメントに使用するお花は、主にハワイ島やマウイ島産のもの。そのほか、ニュージーランドなど海外から取り寄せた花もあります。他の島や国から届いたばかりのお花には泥がついていたり虫がついていたりすることもあり、それらを取り除き綺麗にすることも大事なお仕事のひとつだそうです。また、生花を扱う仕事は“時間との勝負”。早朝から仕事を始めてウェディングやイベント会場で飾り付けをしたり、時には夜遅くまで作業をしなければならないこともあるそうです。子どもたちは、普段聞くことのないお花屋さんの裏側のお話に興味津々でした。
ワークショップのアクティビティを始める前には、クイズ形式でトロピカルフラワーについて学び、店内にある花をCourtneyさんに見せてもらいました。アンスリウムやプルメリアなど身近な花もあれば、キングプロテアやヘリコニアなど子どもたちにとってあまり馴染みのない花もあり、近くで見たり触れたり、匂いを嗅いだりするのは新鮮な体験となったようでした。
最初のアクティビティでは、PAIKOが用意してくれた数種類の切り花や葉っぱを使って、大きな透明シートに貼り付ける「ボタニカルコラージュ」を作りました。真ん中に好きな花を置いてデザインする子、葉っぱでハートの形を作る子、花と葉を使って人の形を表現する子、花びらを一枚ずつ丁寧に並べていく子など、一人ひとり全く違う、ユニークで個性的な作品が完成しました。
二つ目のアクティビティでは、店内にあるトロピカルフラワーや葉を使った「ブーケ作り」に挑戦しました。Courtneyさんの説明やアドバイスを聞きながら、お気に入りの花を選ぶ子どもたちの姿は真剣そのもの。どの長さ・大きさの花から順番に組むと綺麗にまとまるかなど、ブーケ作りのコツも丁寧に教えていただきました。
「これはお母さんにあげるの」「いつも遊んでくれるお姉ちゃんにあげたい」と、贈る相手を思い浮かべながら、一生懸命作っている姿がとても印象的でした。最後に好きな色のペーパーとリボンを選んで包み、世界にひとつだけのオリジナルブーケが完成！ブーケを大事に抱える子どもたちの顔は、誇らしさと嬉しさでいっぱいでした。
今回の体験を通して、子どもたちはハワイのさまざまな花に触れ、お花屋さんの仕事について学び、大切な人を想いながら作品を作るという特別な経験をしました。
そして、Courtneyさんが伝えてくれた「花をもらうとみんな幸せな気持ちになるよね」という言葉を、子どもたち一人ひとりが実感してくれたのではないかと思います。
