MIRAI HANA 第三回こども仕事体験ワークショップ報告「サユミブライダル＆ヘアメイクLISA、ヘアメイク編」（日本語は英語の下にあります）
On Sunday, September 7, twelve children took part in a hands-on hair and makeup workshop at Sayumi Bridal, located in the Waikiki Shopping Plaza. Inside the boutique, rows of beautiful white wedding gowns lined the walls, with three bright red chairs facing large mirrors and tables filled with professional tools. Just stepping into the salon created a sense of excitement.
From the start, the atmosphere was full of energy. Several of the children already dream of working in hair and makeup in the future, so their “motivation switch” was fully on—questions and comments flowed nonstop throughout the two hours, along with plenty of smiles.
We began with a story from Sayumi Anthony, the founder of Sayumi Bridal. Inspired by her mother who owned a salon in Japan, Sayumi opened this Hawaii salon 25 years ago, and has managed it ever since. For her, this was the realization of a lifelong dream. Today, Sayumi Bridal not only serves brides on-site but also dispatches professional artists to weddings all across Hawaii. Two of their senior artists—each with over 10 years of experience—were our instructors for the day. The children’s endless questions showed just how eager they were to learn.
Next came the practice sessions.
Hair Styling:
The kids started with the popular “kururinpa” technique. After watching a demonstration, each child received their own brush and hair ties from MIRAI HANA and practiced with a partner, guided by the instructors. They quickly discovered how hair type and length can affect the final look. Once everyone’s hairstyle was complete, we paused for a group photo.
Makeup:
When asked, “Are you ready for makeup?” the kids shouted an enthusiastic “Yes!” With serious expressions, they carefully watched the demonstration on applying eyeshadow and lipstick. “The eyes are delicate, so be gentle,” the instructors reminded them. Each child then received pink eyeshadow (from MIRAI HANA) and pink lipstick (from Sayumi Bridal), and once again paired up to practice on each other. Their focus and skill impressed even the professional staff, who were amazed to see such determination from elementary schoolers. They also noticed that even with the same colors, the results varied depending on each child’s skin tone and preferences.
After finishing both hair and makeup, it was time for another round of photos.
Special Highlight – The Gacha Prize:
Following their journal writing, the children enjoyed the MIRAI HANA Gacha. The jackpot prize was a chance to try on a wedding gown, generously provided by Sayumi Bridal. Two lucky winners were transformed into brides, complete with tiaras, veils, and flowing gowns. With staff helping carry the long trains, the children walked gracefully across the floor—just like real brides. Looking in the mirror, they were left speechless with excitement.
Reflections:
When asked, “What was the most fun part today?” most of the children answered, “Doing my partner’s hair and makeup.” The Sayumi Bridal staff shared that watching the children’s happiness made them feel healed and uplifted, too.
At the very beginning of the workshop, one child had asked: “What’s the most enjoyable part of your job, and why did you choose this work?” The staff all agreed: “Seeing our clients happy makes us happy, too,” and added that they had loved styling hair and makeup since they were children themselves. Hearing this motivated the kids even more.
Through this workshop, the children learned that hairstyling and makeup are not only about beauty—they are about making others happy, and in return, finding happiness in themselves. Although this session focused on weddings, the children also discovered that these skills are valuable in many fields, such as media, events, and entertainment.
It will be many years before today’s participants might wear their own wedding dresses, but we hope that when that day comes, they’ll remember this experience and perhaps even collaborate with stylists to create their own dream weddings—sharing joy just as they did today.

9月7日（日）、ワイキキショッピングプラザにある「Sayumi BridaI」で、こども12人がヘアメイクのお仕事体験をしました。真っ白なウェディングドレスがたくさん並んでいる店内には、真っ赤な椅子が三つ。花嫁がヘアスタイルとメイクアップをしてもらう椅子とその前にある大きな鏡、そして、プロが使う道がずらり。見ただけでテンションが上がる光景です。今日は将来ヘアスタイルやメイクアップの仕事につきたいこどもが何人もいて、「やる気」スイッチ全開のスタートとなり、発言も質問も多く、元気、そして笑顔いっぱいの２時間となりました。
まず最初に、Sayumi Bridalの創業者のSayumi Anthonyさんから、サロンを始められた経緯をお聞きしました。日本でサロンを開いているお母さんが、25年前にハワイにこのお店を開いて以来、Sayumiさんがオーナーを勤めています。Sayumiさんにとっては、このサロンは「夢が実現したお仕事」だったそうです。今では、ここにいるヘアメイクアーティストさんたちをハワイの様々なウェディングに派遣もされています。今日講師として教えていただいたお二人もここで10年勤務されるヘアメイクのプロです。こどもたちからはウェディングでのヘアメイクのお仕事についての質問が止まらず、関心の強さがはっきりわかりました。
お話の後は、早速ヘアスタイルとメイクアップの練習をしました。まず、ヘアスタイル編では、よく使われる「くるりんぱ」に挑戦。最初にスタッフお二人のデモンストレーションを見て、その後こどもたちはMIRAI HANAからマイブラシとゴムをもらい、スタッフの指導のもと、ペアになったお友達と一緒にお互いの髪で練習をしました。同じ「くるりんぱ」のやり方でも、髪質や髪の長さによって、でき具合が違ってくることも学びました。全員のヘアスタイルが決まったところで記念撮影。そして、「メイクアップの準備はできてる？」と聞くと、全員元気に「Yes!」
心はすでにメイクアップのこどもたち。先走る気持ちをおさえながら、真剣なまなざしでスタッフお二人のデモンストレーションを見てアイシャドウとリップのつけ方を学んでいました。「目はデリケートだから、やさしくつけて」と大切なアドバイスももらいました。そして、こどもたちはMIRAI HANAからピンク系のアイシャドウ、Sayumi BridaIからピンクのリップをもらって、またペアのお友達と一緒にお互いにメイクアップをする練習をしました。作業中のこどもたちは、とても小学生とは思えないような真剣な表情、そして、職人顔負けの立ち振る舞いは、見ているスタッフも驚きの連続でした。メイクアップも、同じ色を使っても、肌や好みによって、仕上がりが違ってくることにも気がつきました。ヘアスタイルとメイクアップが終わったこどもたちは、もう一度記念撮影。
お仕事手帳を書いた後は、お楽しみのMIRAI HANA ガチャガチャの時間。今日の大当たりはSAYURI BRIDALからいただいたウェディングドレスの試着でした。このプレゼントに当たった、こども2名はスタッフの方にウェディングドレスを着せてもらって、花嫁姿に大変身しました！ティアラとベールまでつけ、スタッフの方に長いドレスの裾を持っていただいて、フロアを歩く姿は花嫁そのものです。鏡で自分の姿を見た2人は、言葉が出ないほど感動したことでしょう。
最後の感想で「今日一番楽しかったことは何？」の質問に、ほとんどのこどもは「パートナーのヘアスタイルやメイクをしたこと」と答えました。Sayumi Bridalのスタッフの方々は、「幸せそうなこどもたちを見て、癒された、自分もハッピーになれた。」とおっしゃっていました。
実は、ワークショップの始めに、こどもが「この仕事の楽しいところは何ですか、なぜこの仕事を選んだんですか」と質問しました。Sayumi Bridalのスタッフは全員一致で「お客様が満足してくださって、幸せになる姿を見ると、自分もうれしくなる」、そして、「皆さんのような歳の頃から他の人のヘアスタイルやメイクをするのが好きだった」とおっしゃっていました。それを聞いたこどもたちは、さらにやる気を高めていたのです。今日は、こんな短い時間でも、この仕事の楽しみ、そして夢を少し見られたのではないでしょうか。
ヘアスタイルもメイクアップもお客様を幸せにする仕事、そして、自分まで幸せになれる仕事だということがわかりました。今回はウェディングという特別な場での体験でしたが、ヘアスタイルとメイクアップは、メディア、イベント、エンターテインメントなど、他の業種でもいろいろ活躍できることも教えていただきました。
今回参加したこどもたちが実際に花嫁になるのは、何年も先のことになりますが、いつかその時がきたら、今日の体験を思い出して、スタイリストさんたちと一緒に自分のウェディングをプロデュースして、幸せをシェアできる日が来るといいですね。
